CAB ROTO was engaged to design a flexible function space, bar and kitchen fit out within The Wharf precinct at Mooloolaba.
Working with new client, Kickon Group, and long-time collaborator Farrago, we developed a light-filled, adaptable venue suited to weddings and corporate events.
A key design move was negotiating with the landlord (also a client of ours) the installation of skylights, which transformed the space by introducing natural light and allowing for high-level planting.
The material palette balances warmth and durability, with a spotted gum and blackbutt timber floor echoing the mixed-species character of old exposed timber flooring. White painted joinery, exposed trusses and vaulted roof structure enhance the sense of openness, while extensive but aesthetically integrated acoustic treatment provides much needed ambient conditioning for noisy events.
The layout accommodates multiple configurations, maintaining a neutral aesthetic that allows customisation for different events. Seating arrangements, lighting schemes, and finishes were carefully considered to provide versatility. Real timber flooring was specified over vinyl alternatives to ‘wear in’ over time, reinforcing the venue’s natural character.
Collaboration with consultants and trades ensured efficient integration of services. We worked closely with the hydraulics engineer to resolve new plumbing points without disrupting tenancies below, avoiding costly rework. Instead of an expensive control system, a simplified lighting scheme with multi-zone dimming was designed, giving operators intuitive control over ambience.
Despite initial reservations about design costs, the client quickly came to appreciate the level of detail and service provided.
The end result is a refined, highly functional venue that maximises its footprint and enhances the Sunshine Coast’s function and events space offering.
